New York is a city of exhibitionists. Celebrations, parades and other opportunities for exuberant dressing up present a visual carnival of self-expression. For years,I have photographed a wide array of people who like to show themselves off in public: those who dress up in period costumes, participants in the various ethnic and social festivals, street orators and demonstrators, Times Square street performers cadging dollars off the tourists… As an observer who tries to be as inconspicuous as possible, I’m drawn to those brave individuals who display themselves and are able to escape from the constraints of the workaday world, at least for a little while. The work was done with my quiet, discreet Leica rangefinder camera, using black and white film for the timeless, classic look that medium gives.
